Volgende naweek is daar hope pret in Klerksdorp -
hoog in die lug asook plat op die aarde. Die Klerksdorp
Pilot’s Association (KPA) en Matlosana Stadsraad se lugskou
vind op Saterdag 26 Junie by die PC Pelser-lughawe buite die
stad plaas. Dis die perfekte manier om die hele gesin tydens
die labg vakansie besig te hou.

Soccer fever kicks off in Potchefstroom with a group of professional Flamenco dancers that will appear in the Drakenstein Restaurant on the NWU Campus.

These dancers’ performances start on the same day the Spanish soccer team arrives in the city on 11 June. Their performance also includes a touch of Africa with the Via Katlehong group from Johannesburg that will be doing gumboot dances.

The appearances are an initiative of the Spanish Embassy that has contracted the El Rincon Flamenco group from Johannesburg for the performances.

The dancers will give performances at 22:30 and 23:30 on 11 to 13 June, 17-19 June, 22 and 23 June, 26 and 27 June and 30 June and 1 July in die Drakenstein Restaurant on the PUK Campus. Admission is free of charge.

If the Spanish soccer team should advance to the qualifying rounds, further performances will also be given.

The Information Centre for Southern African Music announces the PUK Chancellor’s Trust Prize for Afrikaans Composition for 2010. The closing date for entries is Thursday, 30 September 2010.

In order to enter, composers must submit the entry form as well as a portfolio of compositions, in duplicate. The portfolio must contain three recent works. The duration of the works, the instrumentation and other decisions regarding the nature of two of the works in the portfolio is up to the composer. The third work must contain a part for solo voice with a text in any language. Composers are responsible for choosing the text(s) and obtaining the rights for its/their use. The instrumentation and duration of this third work is also the composer’s choice. Only composers born after 30 September 1970 and who are South African citizens may enter.

After an evaluation of the portfolios, ISAM will commission two composers to each write one composition of 6-12 minutes’ duration for soprano, viola and piano. The viola part must also be suitable for clarinet, or a version of the part for clarinet should be prepared by the composer. The names of these two composers will be announced in November 2010. This work, according to the requirements of the PUK Chancellor’s Trust of the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, must have an Afrikaans text and must be delivered to ISAM no later than Friday   11 February 2011. The commission fee for each new work will be R7,500 sponsored by the PUK Chancellor’s Trust. The commissioned works will be performed during a South African Music Concert in Potchefstroom in May 2011. This concert may be repeated in other venues.

The administration of the prize is managed by the Information Centre for Southern African Music (ISAM) at North-West University.

Town of the Year

Potchefstroom is one for the semi-finalists for the North West Province “Town of the Year” competition presented by Kwêla and Rapport.

The attached article was published in Rapport on 30 May 2010 and Kwêla (KykNET at 20:00) on 2 June 2010. You can vote until 8 June 2010 at 12:00.
